A man accused of masturbating in front of diners at a handful of popular cafes in Townsville has appeared in court for the first time.

Anthony Robert Craven, 54, fronted Townsville Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with eight counts of an indecent act in any place to which the public are permitted access.

Police allege Mr Craven exposed himself and masturbated eight times at a handful of cafes in Idalia, Thuringowa, Douglas and Kirwan in October 2020, and between July and October 2021.

It is alleged some of the indecent acts occurred in front of other people.

Police had been looking for Mr Craven for a number of months before an officer spotted him at a Currajong Cafe in October.

He was arrested and taken to the watch-house where he was charged with the alleged offending.

His Lawyer Troydon Maltby told Magistrate Scott Luxton the charges would not be contested as Mr Craven’s wife watched on from the public gallery, according to The Townsville Bulletin.

He said there had been ‘some negotiations’ with police facts and that a submitted report from Mr Craven’s psychologist would be ‘pivotal’ in determining a verdict.

The matter was adjourned to December 15 where Mr Craven will remain on bail excusing him from appearing at the next mention.

Mr Craven reportedly dodged photographers as he exited the Court with his wife.
